How do you find keywords for your business that will work well for what you do, that has enough competition that you get some traffic but not too much competition so you have no chance of ranking ever in the search results?

Just to recap, a keyword is a term you optimize your website towards in order to try and rank it on a Google search engine or any search engine for that matter. It’s really important to choose your keywords carefully because when you optimize your site and do the work to try and rank for these keywords, you want to make sure it’s actually attainable. Where do you start? Well, the first place I go to is old faithful, the Google Keyword Planner.

The Keyword Planner is an Awesome Tool

Now, this tool is fantastic, it’s primarily built for AdWords but in actual fact, it’s fantastic to determine whether a keyword is attainable or not in organic search as well. Now, when you go to the keyword planner, there are a couple of ways you could use it. You can either try to find new keywords by putting in an example of a keyword that you like along with your websites and Google Keyword Planner will suggest a number of keywords for you to use potentially for your website to optimize towards.

Now, the great thing about the keyword data the Google Keyword Planner provides is that it gives you an indication as to competition levels. If a keyword is high in search volume and high in competition, it’s a very, very popular keyword that a lot of people wished they could actually rank for. Now, what you want to do is find the keyword with search volume with medium or low competition to make sure you actually have a chance to rank.

Keyword research should lead all activity in search marketing

When you generate the keyword list on the Google Keyword Planner, take a look, filter the results as necessary, even download the results and filter them within excel as a CSV file, and take a look and try and find the keywords in there that would be great for your business but also have low or medium levels of competition while remaining relevant of course, and also make sure that they have search volume as well to boot.

Not long ago, you used to be able to access the keyword planner without having an AdWords account. That’s no longer the case, so to access the keyword planner from Google you need to have a Google AdWords account which is very easy to set up, you could set one up in minutes. The second tool I love to use is located at That was a website, Now, this website is fantastic. It’s like the Google Keyword Planner in a lot of ways.

I’m sure they get quite a lot of their data from Google as well but the difference is it has a massive suggest feature. I find the suggest feature on this tool to be better than that of a Google Keyword Planner. Sometimes, I use both tools together. I get my suggestions from, I can download them, and then put the list directly into the keyword planner on AdWords, and get a better reflection as to competition and search volume levels.

Use The Keyword IO Tool Too

Now, one thing to bear in mind is that every single person searching on Google has a different search results page based on location, previous pages they’ve gone to, all kind of contextual stats that Google uses to serve that search results page. When you go to the keyword planner or, the results for search volume are not actually true. They are an indication, they are a leverage, they are a meter to go by.

They’re not the exact number of searches you will get. You might look at a term and say, “This keyword only gets 20 searches a month or might get a hundred searches a month”, but in actual fact is much more than that as well particularly on the Google Keyword Planner because they only use exact match data, they don’t include any close variance or any kind of styles of different ways people can search for the same thing.

Therefore, the data inside it will be a little bit different to what’s expected when you get the real results. They don’t take into consideration, closed variants, or different spellings or different ways to phrase the same keyword. Pretty much it’s all exact match so the person typing in the search term exactly as monthly statistics. Now, we both know people don’t use Google like that, a human searching does not search for a keyword, they use a search term.

Search terms are getting longer and longer and longer, and they’re matching to these keywords and that’s what Google tries to do. Now, keywords are really important for SEO but let’s not forget what Google is trying to do here. What Google wanted to do is to be able to crawl your website and understand contextually what you’re doing without the need to look for keywords. Now, what do I mean by that? Well, Google’s latest algorithm release will actually look at your site from an artificial intelligence point of view.

It will crawl your website and decide for itself what the content is and how relevant that content is to its users and serve the content for the search results based on that. You can start to see why keywords are becoming less and less important in the world of SEO but they are still a massive factor. Definitely, optimize your website towards keywords, do thorough keyword research, and find the keywords that work well for your business that gives you search volume as well as actually having low levels of competition to give you the chance to actually have a go at ranking for the some of these terms.
