How to Land Your First Speaking Gig

Transcript – How to Land Your First Speaking Gig

Speaking engagements are a fantastic way to grow your personal brand. It’s not just for the likes of Gary Vaynerchuk and Tony Robbins. You too should be building your personal brand. Be that as a marketer or as a small business owner, and speaking engagements is a perfect way to do that. I’m going to show you guys exactly how you can get yourself on the stage, and become a speaker in your industry or niche, and that is coming up.

Hi guys, Darren Taylor here. The Big Marketer giving you tips, insight, and opinion on all things marketing. If that’s up your street, you should consider subscribing. Today, I’m going to break down for you how to get your very first speaking gig. Now, why would you want to do speaking gigs? Well, if you haven’t already. You should definitely do it because there is no better way to highlight your personal brand in your industry or niche than taking the stage and speaking to a crowd of your peers is absolutely fantastic.

Now, I started speaking about two years ago. I’m going to tell you how I got my first opportunity and explained why you can get the same opportunity, and that there a gap in the market for you to take advantage of for you to be able to take the stage. Let’s get started. Now, most people that watch my channel are either marketers themselves or their small business owners, entrepreneurs looking to take their marketing to the next level.

Start With Universities and Colleges

Now, in either case in either opportunity, there is a great way for you to start speaking and here’s how it works. I graduated from the University of Greenwich in London in 2009, and I regularly go back to my University and speak about marketing, and you can too. No matter what you studied, which university you went to, be that in England, be that in America. No matter where you are, there is always a way you can contact your alumni network for your University, and try, and find a speaking gig. Most or more often than not, your university will probably want you to come.

Now, why? The reason is because as soon as they write their course materials for the next year coming, they’re already out of date because in practice digital marketing changes so quickly by the time the course materials are out. There’s a huge, huge knowledge gap. That’s something as a marketer, and someone who wants to be a bud speaker, and take the stage can take advantage of. Now, I hear you saying, “What about small business owners? What about us? If we want to do speaking around what we do?” Well, same thing applies.

If you are somebody who’s in business, and growing and developing a business, that’s a huge value for any student studying business or business admin or finance or anything along those lines. That’s a huge, huge benefit for them. By contacting your university to give some insights into the modern world of running a business, and give that kind of insight you’ve developed since graduating, they will absolutely love you for it nine times out of 10.

Be Excellent and Enthusiastic in Your Field

I just heard another question. Here’s an obvious one, “What if I didn’t go to university? What do I do then? I’ve never graduated. I don’t think I’ll be welcome to speak at university.” Well, you’re absolutely wrong. I know people who have never gone to university who still speak at universities because their real-life knowledge is still applicable. It doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, if you’re a university learning marketing or learning a trade in terms of business, then you’re going to take the knowledge and help from somebody who’s actually out there in the field doing what you want to do.

How on earth can you get a speaking gig – I’ll show you!

How do you get in touch with the University to do speaking? Well, if you graduated from a university, then you get in touch with your alumni network. Pretty self-explanatory, right? If you’re not from university, you’ve got some hustling to get going on with because you have to email speculatively every single institution you can think of that you can travel to in traveling distance.

Now, it will take a long time. You might write really well-worded emails specifically for the point of contact who can actually book you and find out who that person is by looking at the university’s website. It’s difficult. You’re going to have a long road ahead of you to get that done, but the opportunity is worth it because with speaking, becomes authority. You become an authority within your network, within your niche, when you do start speaking. It’s really important if you want to take that to the next level that you do try and take the stage because it’s a great opportunity.

Again, I have to stress. It is not just for Tony Robbins and Gary Vaynerchuk or even if we go step back from that, and actually look at who’s speaking at the moment. It’s not just for top executives. It’s not for the head of marketing at Coca-Cola. It’s not for the person at the top of an agency, the biggest media buyers. It’s for absolutely everyone and your personal brand is going to massively grow when you start speaking. Guys, get out there start contacting educational facilities and get on this stage because like me, if you’re like me, you will absolutely love it.

It Builds Up Over Time

Don’t forget this whole thing could snowball. Once you’ve done one speaking engagement, the world of your niche is very small, word can soon spread, you’ve got an example of how you can speak, you’ve got a slide deck to use. You can start pitching out your services to speaker any other events, be that business, trade shows, anything you could start to speak, because you’ve proven you can deliver a speech that can work well with people within your niche. They’ll be happy to book you once they’ve seen the proof of concept of your speaking.

What are you waiting for? Start writing e-mails, get out there, get on stage, and get speaking because you will absolutely love it. Thank you so much for watching. If you like these videos go ahead and like it. Leave any comments below. Have you done any speaking engagements yourself before? Let me know in the comments, and how they went, and if that snowball into something else. Most importantly don’t forget to subscribe and I will see you next time.
