Transcript – How to Track Your Rankings With SEM Rush (For Free)
Now, we’re coming towards the end of the course. Now, you’ve gone ahead and you’ve done your keyword research, you understand which keywords you can and can’t target. You’ve gone on to your website, you’ve optimized your keywords, you’ve found a number of terms you can target in the questions in your niche that you could answer for users. Now, you need to understand how your website is actually performing against those keywords in terms of the ranking position of your website.
Well, this is where SEMrush comes in. SEMrush is a website analytics tool for PPC and SEO that allows you to understand how websites are performing on the search results page. Now, with SEMrush, it’s a free account we want to use in this example because this course again, is all about free value. You can do 10 keywords, you can track 10 keywords in SEMrush for free.
You can create a free account quite easily, but I’m going to walk you through how to create an account and how to set up your actual position tracking as well in SEMrush to ensure you can track the results of your SEO. Coming up.
Hey, guys. In this section, I’m going to show you how to set up an account with SEMrush, which is a SEO tracking tool and it’s also a PPC tool as well. For the reasons of this tutorial, we’re going to set up some keyword tracking to make sure that when we’re doing SEO, we know the impact of the changes we make to our web pages and we understand the direction we’re traveling in, and hopefully, increasing our visibility over time.
The first thing I’m going to do is create an account with SEMrush. Of course, I just typed SEMrush into Google and I’m going to head over to semrush.com. Now, it’s going to ask you to log in or to create an account. It starts off with entering your keyword, but what I would normally want to do is I’ll just click on the “Log in” and then I’m going to click on “Register.” I’m going to create a new account with SEMrush.
Once you create your account, you’ll see this screen, and I want to click on SEO because that’s what I’m interested in. Then it says, “Welcome on board.” You can sign up to an overview webinar, but for now, I’m going to skip that. Now, what I’m interested in is rank tracking and position tracking. As you’ll see here, this is the dashboard of SEMrush. The area I want to look at is further down on the main menu, you will see an option called “Position Tracking” under “Rank Tracking.”
This is the report I want to create and this is the report I’m really interested in. I’m going to click that now. The first thing it asks you to do is enter your domain name, so I’m going to start doing that now. I’m going to enter the domain name for Bob’s Plumbers. Now, of course, it’s a test domain on this tutorial, but for you, enter your actual website domain into this area. Next, it will ask you to type in your business name as it appears, which is optional.
I’m going to skip that and go to a device and location. I’m going to type in my area which is United Kingdom and I’m going to keep it as desktop devices primarily. Now, you can change it to mobile as well and I think mobile might be a good place to start for a lot of businesses that are location-based. In actual fact, what I’m going to do is I’m going to start off tracking with mobile first because again, Google have changed their algorithm about a year ago.
The idea is they want to index webpages from a mobile point of view first. Now, when Google looks at a website, the way your site appears on a mobile phone is more important than how it appears on a desktop device, so I’m going to go with mobile for this. Next up, you enter your competitors, you could enter different competitors. It also automatically suggests the number of competitors, but you can actually go ahead and skip this as well.
I’m going to go straight through to keywords. Again, because I’ve entered my website and it’s all about PPC and SEO, it’s come up with some ideas for keywords here, but I’m going to delete those because, of course, the keywords I want to track going back to what I mentioned at the very beginning is these keywords. I’m gonna put those into SEMrush to track over time.
Now, SEMrush lets you track 10 keywords for free before needing to pay for the product, so I’m not too sure how much pricing is at the time of making this video. I’m sure it changes quite frequently as well. Check out the pricing for SEMrush and if it’s something you can afford and it’s something you want to utilize for your business, then I’d advise you get an account because ultimately, you want to track more than just 10 keywords across your entire web domain.
There’s a restriction for this free product just so you can get hands-on and try it. They’ve only given you a trial account. For free, you can track 10 keywords which is enough for the experiment I’m showing you now, but long-term, it makes sense to get a robust solution in place. Whether it’s SEMrush, whether it’s Moz, whichever platform you decide to use, it’s really important that you have enough space to track all the keywords you need.
Again, for this example, I’m tracking the three for that specific page I created to show you. I’m going to click this button to add those to the project. It says an option here to send me weekly updates, so that means you get an email every single week. As to the progress of your tracking, which is good, it gives you an opportunity to keep an eye on how your SEO is doing, but I advise you log in to the platform directly and check anyway, but it’s a good reminder to have.
Then, I’m going to click “Update” to make sure the project is updated with those three target keywords. There you have it. Now, I have successfully set up a position tracking report for those three keywords. I’m going to click cross on this very quickly. The data is being gathered now in the background. Eventually, what will happen is a report will be created to show my position for those specific keywords.
Now, of course, with this example, I don’t expect to have any rankings at all because they’re not keywords in my niche for my website. I’ve only just done it as an example. For a start, the test site I created is de-indexed from Google specifically on purpose, so that won’t happen anyway. This is just to demonstrate to you guys what you should be doing to track your position over time.
I hope this guide has been useful and is something you should be doing to make sure you’re increasing your organic visibility over time and get on and do it. I think this is something you need to do and it’s really important. Once the report has loaded, this is what you’ll see. This is the dashboard for the position tracking reports. As you can see, I’m ranking for nothing, I’ve got no visibility, and I’ve got no rankings at all.
Which is pretty typical of someone creating a new page or a new website and targeting keywords for the first time. Don’t be too alarmed if you see this as well because ultimately, you want to see yourself ranking over time. Now, you’ve made your changes to the website, now Google will have to re-index those changes. That’s one part of it. Again, on-page SEO is only one of three important parts of SEO.
You need to continue to build your backlink profile and increase your off-page activity in order to do that and generate backlinks to your website. In addition to that, you need to make sure your website is technically sound, it’s quick, it’s responsive on mobile devices, it can function on multi-devices and all of that kind of thing as well. That’s not covered on this course. This course is covering purely on-page SEO and keyword research, and that’s one part of SEO.
Ultimately, sometimes what can happen is just doing this part of SEO is enough to see some movements on the rankings which I’ve seen before, but overall, you should be looking at all three areas of SEO. Don’t be too alarmed if you see nothing on this page, but sometimes what can happen is once you’ve made your changes to the website and Google has indexed them, then you’ll see it will start to move position, and it will increase, and you’ll see your optimizations coming through as well.
