How to Learn PPC?
Learning PPC takes a few approaches. You need to first read to get an understanding of what PPC is and how it works, the very basics. Next you need to learn how to leverage specific systems like Google Ads in order to run PPC campaign.
The first place to start when asking how to learn PPC is with free resources like YouTube. My YouTube channel has over 180 free PPC training videos.
Taking PPC courses is a great way to get an understanding of how to run successful PPC campaigns. Courses can walk you thought the key principles and methodologies of Google Ads and beyond.
Lose, Then Win
Unfortunately, the best way to learn how to do PPC is to get hands on, create an account and run campaigns. You may start running campaigns unprofitably before acquiring the knowledge and confidence to run successful and highly profitable campaigns.
When you speak to any PPC expert, me included, we have all done made changes within a campaign that caused the campaign to become less profitable, even though our intention was to optimize performance.
That is the nature of becoming a PPC expert. Learn from mistakes, learn from other people, and get hands on. Only by making mistakes, and learning can you improve as a PPC marketer.
Having unrestricted access to a PPC expert who has been there, done that and got the t-shirt is a huge help on your journey to PPC mastery.
If you find a mentor in the industry and they are willing to answer your questions, it’s a huge help. For me, when I first started out in PPC, I learned from experienced professionals within my industry, who also directed me to great resources where I could further my own learning.
How Long does it take to Learn PPC?
Learning PPC on Google Ads or otherwise doesn’t really have a timeframe for going from complete novice, to profitable campaign manager. If you’re a complete beginner, you can learn how to set up a good campaign with around 2 weeks of dedicated learning time.
But that doesn’t mean you’ll be nearly as knowledgeable as a PPC veteran who has run campaigns for years. It’s important to note that learning PPC doesn’t really have an end. For as long as you advertise on Google Ads, you’ll be learning.
Google always release new features, tools and systems to improve their product. So even if you get to the point in your quest for PPC knowledge where you’re comfortably running profitable campaigns, you will still be learning for years to come. So, the question ‘how long does it take to learn PPC?’ isn’t really one that can be answered.
Why Learning PPC is so Tough
PPC requires what’s called ‘left-brain’ and ‘right-brained’ thinking. If you’re not sure what that means, the term ‘left-brained’ thinking means that you take an analytical approach and methodology to solve problems. The ‘right-brain’ is the creative side of thinking. Most people are dominated by one more than the other, but PPC requires both.
For example, writing effective ads and high converting landing page with great visual appeal is an art, whereas, analysing campaign performance is a science that requires logical thinking. Learning PPC is tough, but you will learn to compensate for your weaker areas.
I am definitely more ‘left-brained’ but have learned to become more creative through practice and learning. I can now write awesome ads and I can even design web pages!
