Transcript – EASY SEO Link Building with HARO (help a reporter out)
Link building is the hardest part of SEO, and with good reason, because it’s the only part of SEO that you have no control over directly. You’re expecting other people to link to your website. But there are some good methods and ways you can build links towards your website without having to struggle as much as you think you need to. In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to build links with a tool called HARO (Help a Report Out), and this is a journalism platform where journalists are looking for people to help contribute to their articles. Yes, there are tons of journalists out there looking for people just like you and businesses just like yours to contribute to new stories that require expertise in your field. I’m going to show you how you can leverage this platform for free in order to build links to your website and generate tons of high authority backlinks that can really help you rank your website when it comes to SEO. Let’s get into it.
Hi guys, Darren Taylor of thebigmarketer.com here, and my job is to make you a better marketer. Now, if you’re new to the channel, I’m Darren Taylor, a digital marketing trainer and consultant. I specialize massively in SEO and PPC marketing. If that sounds up your street you should consider subscribing to the channel. In this video, I’m going to share with you a very interesting tool called HARO (Help a Reporter Out), which will allow you to work with journalists who are looking for people to contribute to articles on the web. As I touched on at the beginning of the video, HARO is a platform where journalists log on and look for people to contribute for stories.
Say, for example, I’m a journalist and I’m looking for somebody to contribute around a topic of health and I write an article about health, and I want to speak to fitness trainers in London who want to contribute to my article because my magazine is based in London. As a journalist, I’d go on there, sign up to HARO, and then hopefully somebody out there with a business specializing in fitness will come back to me and give me some information for my article, and as a reward, I would link to their websites. That’s how the platform works.
If you want to get requests from journalists within your niche just like this, head over to helpareporter.com, and that website is where you would sign up to HARO (Help a Reporter). When you sign up to this website, it’s absolutely free. They do have paid options as well, but ultimately what you’re doing here is registering as a contributor to journalists’ articles. When you register, you will receive two emails a day where you can contribute to articles journalists are looking for contributors for.
Sometimes these emails have up to 30 requests in them each. If you times that by two twice a day, you’re looking at around 60 requests on average per day, every single day, around potentially your industry niche. Now I have to admit, although 60 potential opportunities a day sounds like a lot, how many of those are going to be targeted towards your niche? Not every single one, so you’ve got to keep an eye on your inbox and on those emails because you don’t want to miss out when they talk about your niche. At the end of the video, I’m going to share with you some successes I’ve had with this platform, so you don’t want to miss that. Before I go onto the rest of the video, if you’re liking what you’re hearing so far, hit the subscribe button and don’t forget to hit the like button as well, and let me know in the comments if you are excited to outreach to journalists.
You’ve signed up, you’ve registered, you’ve got emails coming to your inbox and you spot an article a journalist is working on within your niche. What do you do next? Of course you reply to the requests. How do you do that? Well, lucky for you guys, I’ve put together some quick-fire tips that will really help you get good responses from journalists when reaching out on this platform because you have to remember you’re not the only one pitching a story or a comment to a journalist. There’s going to be a ton of other businesses out there doing exactly the same so you need to make sure you stand out. Here is how you do it. First of all, make sure your business is relevant to what the journalist is asking for. You remember my mention at the beginning of the video where I said if somebody is outreaching for a health-based article, if you’re into DIY and home improvement you have nothing to contribute in that regard. Don’t just speculate and outreach to every single story hoping somebody will pick you up because it doesn’t work like that. You need to make sure you’re outreaching and replying to the right journalists for the right story. Stay within your league niche and stay in your lane.
The next thing you need to do is explain why you are better qualified to provide commentary for their article. Just give a small snippet as to your expertise and why you are the person they should be talking to, to complete their article. It shouldn’t take too long, but you should nail down your expertise and explain to them why you are the person to do it. Next thing, of course, is to provide your commentary. Generally speaking, this commentary you’ll get within articles is going to be about three to four lines of texts. There’s not going to be a huge comment or huge contribution because typically with these articles the journalist is looking for multiple contributors and you will be one of a few or of many. Keep your answers succinct, but also something to consider is even though it’s succinct you still need to provide as much detail as possible, so it’s a delicate balance between a lot of information over a small amount of space. You’ve got to get that balance right. Convey your points, don’t ramble, don’t talk around the subject, get straight to the point and explain exactly what they’re looking for.
The next thing here is really, really important. What you need to do is provide them with a media pack. I don’t mean a media pack like big businesses have where you have a massive PDF with loads of assets and images to download or anything like that. All you need to do is provide them with a few key pieces of information so they know who you are and what you’re about. This includes links to your social media profiles. Of course, the all-important link to your website because that’s what’s going to be linking back to you when the article goes live. You also need to provide a headshot because they might want to picture you in the article next to your commentary, so provide a link to a good headshot image when you contribute.
In addition, you might want to provide your Skype as well because a lot of these journalists might want to discuss with you before they set the article live to get a bit of background and to understand who you are, and the article might appear in a country different to yours, so Skype’s a great way to communicate in that regard. You should also provide a small snippet of text that succinctly explains your company, who you are and what you do. This is often known as a boilerplate in the market world. Keep a small maybe two-line sentences of what you do as well because that will give a good snapshot and a good author bio of your business.
Finally, you should also provide links to articles you have written previously that have appeared on other websites. Any other high profile websites you’ve contributed to, then you should provide links to those as well because it’s going to build up your authority, it’s going to give the journalists confidence that they’re speaking to the right person, so be sure to include that as well. Now you know how to use this system. Hopefully, you guys will receive emails like this one I’ve received really recently around getting an article live once you’ve contributed through the platform. For all of you still watching this video who made it this far through, there’s one more parting gift I’ve got for you. I’ve actually linked a template of how to reach out on HARO below, where I’ll show you how I reach out to journalists and get success like the email I just showed you. This is the template I use and this is the format I go with. If you use it, you should get some good responses from journalists.
